Did Did you know that over 450 million children have a sight condition that requires treatment, though many are unable to access care?
World Sight Day is celebrated in October. At Life’sWork of Western PA, we want to shine a light on this important day, one dedicated to highlighting the importance of eye care in young people. It’s also a day designed to help inspire children everywhere to love their eyes. The day is “a megaphone for child eye health” and stresses the importance of eye health on our overall wellness, including the need to ensure that we all have access to eye health care that is readily available and affordable.
We need to prioritize eye health and work with organizations like the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB)—the group behind World Sight Day—to ensure that future generations “have all the information they need to protect their eyes and, crucially, take the steps needed to look after their vision.” Such steps include
- Reducing screen time
- Placing importance on outside time
- Seeking help for any ailments or discomforts
Eye health for our younger generations is not optional. It is critical to growing up healthy, realizing future economic potential, and unlocking educational opportunities. In fact, children with untreated eye conditions often miss out on social and learning experiences. Many eye conditions are treatable, correctible, even curable. Let’s work to build a world where every child can unlock their full potential.
